Welcome to Luck of the Draw, our modern quilt challenge where chance meets creativity! Participants will craft a modern quilt guided by rules drawn randomly from two separate silos: Hues and Design Concepts.

Timeline & How to Participate

  • Challenge Window: Runs from November 2026 through May 11, 2027.

  • Jump In Anytime: Members can draw concepts and start a challenge quilt at any point during the challenge window!

  • Finished Quilts may be submitted at any time. May 11, 2027 is the last date finished quilts will be eligible for challenge prizes.

How the Challenge Works

  1. Submit the Signup Form: Fill out our brief registration form. Once submitted, our automated system will randomly select and assign one Hue and one Design Concept from two independent silos. Each silo contains a total of 80 items, including 4 Wildcards in each.

    • Wildcard Odds: With 4 Wildcards in each 80-item silo, there is a high statistical likelihood that several participants will draw one during the challenge!

  2. The Draw is Final: Once a hue or design concept is drawn, it is permanently removed from the pool for subsequent draws.

  3. Bring Your Vision to Life: Create a modern quilt that honors both your drawn hue and your design concept. Beyond fulfilling the requirements of your specific draw, you retain total creative freedom over fabric selection and composition.

Challenge Rules & Guidelines

  • Where the Hue Goes: Your drawn hue must be included in some way within the main quilt body. Binding and backing do not count toward this requirement.

  • Size & Perimeter Requirements: The finished quilt can be any shape you choose (square, rectangle, triangle, organic, etc.), but its total perimeter must measure between 96 inches and 180 inches.

    • Example (Square): A 24 in x 24 in quilt has a 96-inch perimeter ((24 + 24) x 2 = 96 in).

    • Example (Rectangle): A 38 in x 52 in quilt has a 180-inch perimeter ((38 + 52) x 2 = 180 in).

  • How Wildcards Work: If you draw a Wildcard, you get to select your choice from whatever items remain available within that same silo. A Hue Wildcard lets you pick any remaining available hue from the color silo, and a Design Concept Wildcard lets you pick any remaining available design concept from the design silo. They do not cross over.

  • Fabric Freedom: You may use any fabric you like—solids, prints, batiks, woven textures, or scraps—as long as your drawn hue is included and the finished piece is a modern quilt.
